SOME IMPORTANT DATES
1894
The theatre is officially inaugurated on the 22nd May, by their Majesties King Carlos and Queen Amélia de Orleães, in honour of whom the theatre is called Teatro Dona Amelia. The inauguration show is Offenbach’s operetta The Drum Major’s Daughter.
1896
The theatre is equipped with the Cinematographo: The Animated Photography.
1911
Following the change of regime in 1910, the theatre is renamed Teatro da República.
1914
A violent fire destroys the theatre almost entirely.
1916
The theatre reopens. The opening play is Os Postiços de Eduardo Schwalbach, attended by the President of the Republic, Bernardino Machado.
1918
S. Luís de Braga Viscount dies. Paying tribute to its biggest supporter ever to exist, the theatre was renamed São Luiz Theatre.
1928
The theatre becomes a cinema, opening with Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, accompanied by a 15 element orchestra.
1971
The theatre turns into municipal property, named S. Luiz Municipal Theatre, opening with the play The World’s Salvation, by José Régio, with the actress Eunice Muñoz.
2002
The musical Amália, by Filipe La Féria, is presented in the Theatre. In November, the whole space opens to the public, after extensive works.
