In 2024, the magazine Sinais de Cena – Revista de Estudos de Teatro e Artes Performativas celebrates its 20th anniversary. Founded in 2004 by Carlos Porto, Luiz Francisco Rebello, Paulo Eduardo Carvalho and Maria Helena Serôdio, it was a result of the efforts made by Associação Portuguesa de Críticos de Teatro and Centro de Estudos de Teatro da Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa. At the time when it was founded, there was a need for it due to the “rapid decrease of the space devoted to theatre in the media”, but also due to the lack of a space for theoretical debate, historical research, critical judgement and questioning of the relationship between the theatre and other art forms, as Maria Helena Serôdio wrote in the editorial to the first issue. Twenty years on, it is inevitable to review the progress made: What has changed? What has evolved? How relevant is the magazine now? How to keep the debate about performing arts alive? The question about the trajectory, mission and objectives of Sinais de Cena is coupled with the certainty that it wishes to remain a space to document, debate and analyse what is happening in the field of the performing arts in Portugal and the world. To commemorate the past, the present and the future of Sinais de Cena, the launch of the third issue of series III serves as an occasion for a discussion with special guests.
