Description

Dobra is a lecture-performance in which the lecturer begins by recounting a trip where he felt like he was being stalked by his evil double, his doppelgänger. While watching French films dubbed in Japanese, he fell in love with an unemployed furniture designer who earned a living working in action films, as a stunt double for a famous actor. At this point, the lecturer becomes duplicated. His words unfold. The story being told turns into a dance, the stories transform into gestures in space. Dobra is a play that subtly confronts the possibility of manipulation, from translation to duplication, highlighting the possibility of faking all reality. “The method of dubbing appeals to me as a translation technique, but also as a plastic object. I consider dubbing a voice to be a political act. Unlike subtitles, which enable us to return to the original and come up with our own interpretation, dubbing erases or blurs the original. The new voice replaces the first one, seizing power. Dubbing creates a new identity. In Dobra, I wish to work at two different levels, which influence each other: the text and the performative situation”, writes Romain Beltrão Teule.
