Kavita Shah returns to Portugal after her resounding success in 2023 to present her album, Cape Verdean Blues, live at Teatro São Luiz. The award-winning American jazz singer and composer brings us her album recorded as a tribute to Cesária Évora, and is joined on stage by Bau and Jorge Almeida, on guitars, and N’Du on percussion. At the heart of this 12-track album is Sodade, an idiomatic word with no equivalent in English, but which evokes a melancholy feeling of transience that permeates Cape Verde, its music and its free-spirited island population. “I’ve found a sense of home that eluded me for most of my 37 years living on this paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean”, says Shah. “When I look back, I realise that, when I heard Cesária’s voice almost a decade ago, she was calling me to tread a path that I must pursue in search of sodade.” In collaboration with the renowned guitarist Bau (Cesária Évora, Tito Paris, Bius) and the visionary percussionist Miroca Paris (Madonna, Cesária Évora), the record was launched in August 2023 under the label Folkalist Records.
