Fado singer and singer-songwriter Marco Oliveira presents at Teatro São Luiz his third album, Ruas e Memórias, recorded in November 2019 and the last studio musical production by José Mário Branco, who is also the author of the arrangements and musical direction. “Are you aware that you’re going to make a very sad record? It’s reminiscent of Pessoa’s poem ‘Ah quanta melancolia’. You have an immense bitterness – bitterness dominates the whole set”, José Mário Branco had said months before to Marco Oliveira, who moves between fado and other universes of urban popular music, in a versatility of interpreter, poet, composer and instrumentalist. A “pure” record of fado and Portuguese music, Ruas e Memórias was edited in May 2021 and is the successor to Retrato (2008) and Amor é Água que Corre (2016): a tribute to the city of Lisbon and a rediscovery of the city’s poetic-musical roots, the life and cultural identity of the country. Re-encountering urban popular culture, especially the great emblematic figures of fado, giving continuity to a long work of collecting artistic popular manifestations and oral tradition for the next generations, with the purpose of valuing and sharing the heritage of Portuguese poets and composers and, at the same time, of giving continuity to a song that still breathes in the streets.
