BIO
Our approach is to adapt literary myths to a small theater stage. We centrifuge great works of literature to extract “summaries” through an invigorating and innovative stylization process. With our objects, we want to leave space for the imagination, for evocation, for metaphor, for what remains of the child’s soul in each spectator. With references known to everyone, we defend a popular, visual and poetic theater, made of pieces of string, artisanal, raw and stripped down.
After Madame Bovary and Carmen, female figures who pose the question of freedom from an immoral point of view in the first and amoral in the second, here is Jean Valjean, the moral figure par excellence.
– Compagnie Karyatides
At the heart of the work of the Belgian company Karyatides, based in Brussels, is the adaptation of classic works to object theater. Founded by Karine Birgé and Marie Delhaye, graduates of the Conservatoire d’Art de Liège, the company has presented its work at the most important theater festivals. Among his greatest hits are Madame Bovary, Carmen, Os Miseráveis or Frankenstein, presented at FIMFA in 2022. To serve these stories, they develop a “figure” theater, which mixes puppets, object theater, shadows, paper theaters, visual arts and music. They play with these languages, each with their own specificities, and moving from one to the other. They use manufactured objects, sometimes full of references, they play with the commonplace, the cliché, causing a displacement from which they hope to bring out poetry and, sometimes, humor. These objects, future heroes of their stories or sets of their adventures, come from flea markets, Petits Riens or Emmaus. They were collected or negotiated according to the company’s research and tours. They are almost bio, organic, ethical and completely recycled.
