Celebrating its 125th anniversary, Teatro São Luiz invites pianist and composer Filipe Raposo [ Cinemateca Portuguesa’s resident pianist] to create an original score for Fritz Lang’s masterpiece of German Expressionism, Metropolis. The new score for a chamber orchestra of 15 musicians is, in itself, a reflection on the dystopian view of large cities where there is a prevalence of massive verticality, dense textures, symmetrical planes and rhythmic sound environments that evoke the cogs of heavy machinery and simultaneously a look from the future (our present) to the past. This commission by São Luiz emerges as a symbolic gesture, linking the memory of the Theatre (where Metropolis premiered in Portugal) with its future.
